The English golfer Wins Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed remarkable nerve to secure the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory over the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last hole.

Playoff Decider

That led to a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Other Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
