Saints Coach Phil Dowson: ‘I Tried Working for a Bank – It Was Tough’

This English town isn't exactly the most glamorous location on the planet, but its rugby union team delivers a great deal of thrills and drama.

In a town renowned for shoe production, you could anticipate punting to be the Saints’ main approach. However under head coach Phil Dowson, the team in the club's hues choose to keep ball in hand.

Although representing a quintessentially English town, they showcase a flair synonymous with the finest French exponents of expansive play.

From the time Dowson and the head coach Sam Vesty stepped up in 2022, Northampton have won the Premiership and progressed well in the European competition – defeated by their Gallic opponents in last season’s final and eliminated by Leinster in a penultimate round earlier.

They lead the league standings after four wins and a draw and visit Bristol on the weekend as the just one without a loss, chasing a initial success at their opponent's ground since 2021.

It would be expected to think Dowson, who played 262 premier games for Newcastle, Northampton and Worcester in total, consistently aimed to be a manager.

“During my career, I didn't really think about it,” he states. “But as you age, you comprehend how much you appreciate the rugby, and what the everyday life is like. I worked briefly at a financial institution doing work experience. You travel to work a few times, and it was tough – you realise what you possess and lack.”

Discussions with Dusty Hare and Jim Mallinder resulted in a role at the Saints. Jump ahead a decade and Dowson leads a team increasingly packed with national team players: prominent figures started for England against the All Blacks two weeks ago.

An emerging talent also had a major effect off the bench in England’s perfect autumn while the number ten, down the line, will take over the fly-half role.

Is the rise of this remarkable group due to the club's environment, or is it fortune?

“It's a mix of each,” states Dowson. “My thanks go to Chris Boyd, who thrust them into action, and we had challenging moments. But the experience they had as a collective is undoubtedly one of the causes they are so tight and so talented.”

Dowson also namechecks his predecessor, an earlier coach at the club's home, as a significant mentor. “It was my good fortune to be coached by highly engaging individuals,” he adds. “Jim had a major effect on my professional journey, my training methods, how I deal with individuals.”

Saints execute attractive the game, which was clearly evident in the instance of their new signing. The Gallic player was involved with the Clermont XV beaten in the European competition in last season when Freeman notched a triple. He liked what he saw to such an extent to go against the flow of UK players joining Top 14 sides.

“A friend called me and remarked: ‘We've found a fly-half from France who’s in search of a club,’” Dowson says. “I replied: ‘We don’t have funds for a overseas star. A different option will have to wait.’
‘He wants experience, for the chance to prove his worth,’ my contact said. That caught my attention. We spoke to him and his communication was excellent, he was eloquent, he had a witty personality.
“We asked: ‘What are you seeking from this?’ He responded to be coached, to be challenged, to be facing unfamiliar situations and beyond the Top 14. I was thinking: ‘Join us, you’re a great person.’ And he has been. We’re blessed to have him.”

Dowson says the 20-year-old the flanker offers a specific enthusiasm. Has he coached a player like him? “No,” Dowson responds. “All players are unique but Pollock is different and unique in many ways. He’s unafraid to be authentic.”

Pollock’s spectacular touchdown against the Irish side previously showcased his freakish ability, but various his expressive during matches antics have led to allegations of cockiness.

“He sometimes appears arrogant in his actions, but he’s the opposite,” Dowson clarifies. “Plus he's not joking around all the time. Tactically he has contributions – he’s not a clown. I think on occasion it’s portrayed that he’s merely a joker. But he’s bright and great to have within the team.”

Not many managers would admit to enjoying a tight friendship with a assistant, but that is how Dowson characterizes his connection with Vesty.

“Together possess an interest regarding diverse subjects,” he explains. “We maintain a reading group. He aims to discover everything, aims to learn each detail, wants to experience varied activities, and I think I’m the similar.
“We talk about many subjects away from the sport: movies, books, concepts, art. When we played our French rivals previously, Notre-Dame was undergoing restoration, so we had a quick look.”

A further match in the French nation is coming up: Northampton’s return with the English competition will be temporary because the continental event kicks in shortly. The French side, in the vicinity of the Pyrenees, are the opening fixture on matchday before the Bulls arrive at soon after.
