Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Leadership Change
The former official declared he would withdraw from public positions after legislative body disclosed his regular correspondence with Epstein

One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.

He remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await following their progress".

The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

Email Communications

The recently released communications revealed that Summers communicated with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged sex trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood his choice to depart.

"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the Board," OpenAI remarked.

Congressional Action

This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on this week to endorse a bill that would compel the Department of Justice to make public its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will then head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he plans to sign the legislation, after changing his view on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A batch of Epstein-related messages released by the House Oversight Committee days ago included multiple well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

The messages indicated that the economist and Epstein often met for meals, with he often trying to introduce the official to influential world leaders.

Personal Accountability

After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, Summers stated he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to maintain interacting with the financier".

He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild trust and fix relationships with the individuals closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under the former leader.

He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his departure from public duties previously on this week, he said he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following the economist's statement on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that the economist was not affiliated with the group.

The former official became part of the leadership of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its CEO the company leader.
