Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.
Broader Portfolio and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
